Clinical Director

Hugh Pinnock, LMFT

AFCC Informed, Family Systems Therapist

I have a passion for helping individuals, couples, and families strengthen their relationships and rediscover connection. Whether you are navigating conflict within your family system, adjusting to the stress of divorce, or working through personal struggles, I believe that greater understanding of ourselves and our roles can open the door to healing and more meaningful connections.

Before joining Family Advocacy Center here in Salt Lake City, Utah, I worked extensively in the Washington, D.C. area, where I supported clients navigating complex personal and relational challenges in a fast-paced, high-stakes environment. That experience reinforced my commitment to providing clarity, structure, and compassion for families facing difficult transitions — especially when the legal system is involved.

In addition to my clinical work, I also serve as a professor in the psychology department at Salt Lake Community College, where I mentor future professionals while staying connected to the latest research and best practices in the field.

I specialize in court-ordered family therapy, including reunification therapy, co-parenting therapy, and support for families experiencing high-conflict divorce. These experiences can feel overwhelming and isolating, and I believe every family deserves a space where they can feel supported, respected, and understood. My role is to help children and parents strengthen communication, lower conflict, and rediscover connection — even when trust feels broken and the legal process feels heavy.

I draw from many evidence-based approaches, with a particular emphasis on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Motivational Interviewing, Solution-Focused Therapy (SFT), and the Gottman Method. I also integrate Family Systems Therapy, Polyvagal Theory, DBT, Psychodynamic Therapy, and more. These tools allow me to provide both structure and compassion, helping families regulate emotions, clarify roles, and build healthier patterns of interaction.

More than anything, I believe that families already have the capacity for growth and healing — sometimes they just need the right guidance and support to bring it forward. My mission is to help create a strong foundation from which each family member can feel safe, understood, and ready to move forward in life.

Managing relationships, responsibilities, and personal wellbeing can feel overwhelming — especially during divorce or conflict. It’s normal to feel anxious, depressed, or unsure of the future. You don’t have to face these challenges alone. My goal is to help families and individuals across Salt Lake City and throughout Utah find peace, connection, and a stronger foundation for moving forward.

When not working, I enjoy spending time with my dog, Joey, watching movies (especially the Harry Potter series), exploring the outdoors, and pursuing personal passion projects.
